Three man tents might not be quite as common as the more popular 2 man tents, but there are many reasons for considering these slightly larger models.  While some people like the idea of these for two people and a child or three people, many backpackers who go together in pairs are finding the extra room that comes with a three man tent as being very valuable and useful whether just camping out for a single weekend or going on a long backpacking expedition through the Appalachian Trail or across Europe during a gap year.  One of the biggest advantages of a slightly larger tent is having enough space for people (especially if there are only two of you or even just one person) and for your gear, as well.

Types of 3 person tents

Three person tents come in a variety of styles, and knowing the different selections available will make it much easier to pick out the ideal tents for your specific needs.  When dealing specifically with a 3 person tent, there are three general types or styles that you will run into:

1. Dome Tents
2. Pop Up Tents
3. All Season Tents

The type of camping or backpacking you do will go a long way towards determining which type of tent is ideal for you and your specific needs.  All season tents are obviously going to be solidly constructed and cost more because they’re built to hold up better under various seasonal conditions.  While these are definite positives that can’t be overlooked, this also means that the tents are going to be more expensive.  They’re designed for all seasons and to hold up over the long term with hiking, backpacking, and other extreme conditions which can really try the strength and durability of the fabric.

Pop up tents are among the easiest to put up, and the quick set up is part of the reason that many people prefer three person pop up tents over other styles.  These are easy to set up, but might not have the sturdiness of other models, making them less impressive for some hard core backpackers.

3 man dome tents are among the most common, being relatively easy to set up but also having the bonus of support poles to help keep the tent sturdy.  In addition, tarps can be added over the top for additional protection from rain or small flying debris from moderate to heavy winds.

Advantages of 3 man tents

There are many noticeable advantages to a 3 man tent depending on what your specific needs are.  One of the best is obvious: the tent gives extra room while still remaining extremely easy to set up.  Anyone who has tried setting up an 8 or 10 man tent in the dark knows what a pain in the butt that is, especially if you have trouble lighting up the campground while setting up at night.  In addition to adding more room than the basic 2 man tents they don’t weigh that much more, which keeps them ideal for backpackers.

Three person tents are also easily stored at home, not taking up much space and still easy to pull out and use.  There are many different types of 3 person tents which are designed specifically for long term hiking or backpacking, making them excellent buys for many active outdoor people.

Disadvantages of 3 man tents

There are some potential disadvantages to using a three person tent, but that also depends on what your specific needs are.  A 3 person tent might be too small for groups of three or more, as three full sized adults still make for a fairly cramped tent.  Depending on the group or how much room you need, you might need more room than a 3 man tent has to offer.  The other obvious disadvantage to choosing a three man tent is that there are a limited amount of options compared to larger tents.
